UNREEL IS A SPACE built for film enthusiasts by film enthusiasts. Established in 2017, this fiercely independent joint has served an impassioned audience with a unique perspective that puts readers first, advertising and algorithmic overlords be damned.

We always have our ears to the ground for any film writing talents wanting to contribute to our mission as an indie pub. We are partly reader-funded, and most if not all of the funds we get from paid subscriptions go directly to our writers, after hosting and server costs. We allot a small budget for spec and staff writers, but we'd like to note from the outset that, at the moment, writing with us won't replace a full-time income. In fact, most of our contributors work on a voluntary basis.

Here's what we can offer instead:

  • Exclusive invites to press screenings and events.
  • Access to key filmmaking figures as subject matters for interviews and profiles.
  • Your own byline as a film writer. Some of our writers went on to write for bigger publications or became filmmakers themselves.
  • Get your work promoted across our 30-50K readers every month and our 10K+ followers across social channels.
  • Budget permitting, we also sometimes reimburse movie ticket purchases.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Got more questions? Here's a quick FAQ.

How much do you pay writers?

We believe writers should be compensated suitably for their work. We try to work out comfortable arrangements with all our contributors. We offer per-assignment rates, quarterly rev-shares (after web costs), or a mix of both. Again, it's not much and most of our writers contribute voluntarily and decide against opting-in for monetary comp.

What type of writing are you looking for?

We publish regularly, but we like to do it with intention. The internet has far too much content to be another regurgitator of stuff already written in other publications. With that, we're looking to publish original pieces and fresh points of view, be it in forms of reviews, deep-dive analyses, or interviews/profiles. While we publish SEO content (think: guides and listicles), that isn't something we're particularly looking for from our contributors.

Do you only cover Filipino movies?

Yes, and no. We're honed in on writing about Filipino films, but where relevant, we also cover films from other countries (e.g. reporting on a foreign film screened at a local film festival, writing about your moviegoing experience abroad as a Filipino film enthusiast, etc.)

How do I apply?

Use the form we've embedded above. Because of the volume of the emails we receive, we might not be able to respond instantly. It should take us no later than seventy-two hours (or three days) to respond.
